Port Lincoln food retailers are being asked to join a six month program to steer them away from single-use plastics in compliance with the statewide ban.

Plastic Free SA is collaborating Port Lincoln Council on the campaign, which will help operators find green and clean alternatives.

The SA single-use plastics ban came into effect in March this year. The ban denies the sale, supply and distribution of plastic straws, beverage stirrers and cutlery including bioplastic.
“This is a great opportunity for those businesses in Port Lincoln who need some support and real solutions to help them change their practices and further reduce their single-use plastics or find better alternatives and for those who want to take their environmental and sustainable solutions further,” Mayor Brad Flaherty said.

The initiative will prepare local businesses for the additional ban of polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and clamshell containers and Oxo-degradable plastic on March 1, 2022.

“Those businesses who significantly reduce their plastic use can become certified by Plastic Free SA as ‘Plastic Free Champions’,” Mr Flaherty said.

The incentive comes as concerns were raised on local community Facebook pages about extensive litter and plastic along the coastline’s walking trails, lookouts and car parks.

Mr Flaherty encourages the local and wider community to support businesses in their effort to reduce plastic by “always remembering to BYO cup and refuse unnecessary single-use items”.
