Boston Tigers Football Club board happy with the progression, despite 0-8 season

This year’s Port Lincoln Football League wooden spooners aren’t unfamiliar with being on the bottom of the ladder, but here’s why it’s not all doom and gloom.

Introducing the Port Lincoln News

Boston Tigers Football Club coach Chris Vorstenbosch said 2020 is not all doom and gloom for his side, despite experiencing a winless season in the Port Lincoln Football League.

The Tigers and their supporters have seen better days, after the A-grade produced a 0-8 win-less record in the COVID-19 affected campaign.

However Vorstenbosch, who has coached the club the past five seasons, said there were reasons to be positive.

“At the beginning of the year we chose not to go and recruit players,” Vorstenbosch said.

“We wanted to use our youth throughout this year and get some game time into them, we had kids that had never even played A-grade before.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many clubs to consider whether it was worth taking to the field at all once restrictions eased.

For the Port Lincoln Football League, players resumed training at the end of May with the first round kicking off July 4, for 10 rounds before finals.

“The decision we made when we knew we were going back on the park was to not go head hunting and look after the kids that are there and develop them,” Vorstenbosch said.

“It cost us, but they will be better for it next year.”

With their season wrapped up, the crew on St Andrews Terrace are already looking forward, hoping to wrangle some veteran players for next season.

“We want to recruit a few senior players to help to develop these kids again and just have some more leadership on the field.”

Despite being out of the finals, Vorstenbosch will continue to watch the rest of the league closely tipping Marble Range to take the flag.

“The last four or five years they have been right up there but just seem to not capitalise around finals,” he said.

“They seem to have found it at the right time, they have a good squad and play some good footy.”

The Port Lincoln Football League semi-finals kicks off this Saturday, September 13 at Centenary Oval.
