The Paradise O-Bahn interchange has become a hive of construction activity as a new $15.5 million car park takes shape.
Contractors are levelling two areas on the northwestern side of the interchange to provide an extre 360 car park spaces - taking the total to 818.
Pressure to provide more parking has been building for years, with hundreds of cars parked each day on nearby streets and Darley Rd.
The new car park was promised before the last state election by both major parties as they fought off a bid for the seat of Hartley by popular politician Nick Xenophon.
The project has involved the felling of almost 100 native trees, which was criticised by some elected members of Campbelltown Council.
Some elected members were worried the loss of canopy cover and construction of a large, concrete structure would create a heat island “and hostile environment for humans in both summer and winter”.
They also asked if the carpark would have adequate security, especially CCTVs, lighting and duress buttons.
One councillor, Sue Irvine, called for apartments and shops be incorporated into the interchange to create a hub — which was vocally opposed by a large group of residents at a council meeting.
