A man is accused of indecently assaulting a 15-year-old after she consumed alcohol, despite police being right outside.
William Hancock, 46, applied for bail by video link in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday, charged with indecently assaulting a child.
A police prosecutor said they were opposed to anything less than home detention bail.
The court heard the alleged victim was drinking with friends in Pooraka on May 3.
“She went into the kitchen and the accused [indecently assaulted] her,” the police prosecutor said.
The court heard Hancock then came and sat next to her on the couch before allegedly touching her hair and breasts and kissing her.
One of the alleged victim’s friends got into a fight with Hancock and police arrived.
The court heard after police arrived and were talking to the friend outside, Hancock allegedly exposed himself to the girl before following her into a bedroom.
“When the victim told him that she was getting changed, he said ‘oh you want to show me’,” the police prosecutor said.
The alleged victim ran outside and reported Hancock to police.
“These are serious allegations, the victim is a vulnerable 15-year-old,” the police prosecutor said.
“There are concerns for her safety.”
Hancock is charged with indecent assault. He is yet to enter any plea.
Christina Chrisakas, for Hancock, asked the court for Hancock to be released on supervised bail, with a condition not to have any contact with children under the age of 18.
“There doesn’t appear to be any offences of child sex matters on his history,” she said.
“He does currently suffer from dementia.”
The court heard Hancock had a partner.
Ms Chrisakas said arranging medical reports for Hancock could mean he would be remanded in custody for a long time.
“Given he does have dementia it may take even longer than normal,” she said.
Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos granted Hancock bail, with strict conditions not to have any contact with children under the age of 18, unless in the presence of a parent or guardian.
The charges were adjourned until July.
