WOOLWORTHS was due to close its Regency Plaza supermarket, on Main North Rd, at the weekend.
The supermarket giant recently announced plans to redeploy Regency Plaza staff to other stores across Adelaide.
It has said it plans to close the doors of its supermarket in the inner north for the last time on Sunday.
“We are fully committed to supporting our team members who have all been redeployed into other stores in the area,” a Woolworths spokeswoman said.
“We wish to thank our customers for their support and we look forward to welcoming them at our neighbouring North Park store.”
Further details of why the store was closing, or what will likely occupy the space once the supermarket giant vacates it, were not provided.
The Regency Plaza supermarket is referred to as a drawcard in a real estate pitch advertising another property “previously trading as a bank” at the shopping centre, now also available for lease.
“Regency Plaza Shopping Centre is only 7km north from Adelaide’s CBD positioned on the corner of Main North Rd and Regency Rd offering to you, maximum exposure seven days a week,” writes Realcommercial.com.au.
“Major tenants include Woolworths, Lincraft and the Northern Tavern who are further supported by a mix of specialty stores — this centre is the ideal place for any business.
“This well-presented centre is neighbouring Sefton Plaza Shopping Centre and Northpark Shopping Centre is just across the street, creating an exciting commercial and retail development strip along Main North Rd.”
In July last year a Coles supermarket at Blair Athol, that had served the local community for more than three decades, was closed.
The closure of the Prospect Rd shop leaving Northpark Shopping Centre, Prospect, or Churchill Centre, Kilburn, as the nearest alternate supermarket locations for local residents.
And in April 2015 the IGA supermarket at Walkerville suddenly closed after serving groceries for half a century.
At the time, manager Toby Lee, who had been at the store for 17 years, said it could no longer compete with a neighbouring 2500sq m Woolworths, built in 2013.
“This is a small community area and it’s just so sad that we have to close,” he told the City North Messenger at the time.
“Our loyal customers kept coming in to help us stay open but we’ve been fighting for two years and we’ve lost.”
