Warrant issued for arrest of criminal neglecter Sherrie Charlton-Wesley

A mother who pleaded guilty to criminal neglect after a toddler ingested fantasy has allegedly failed to complete anything in her bail agreement.

A mother allowed to walk free from court after pleading guilty over a baby girl found with an illicit drug in her system has failed to fulfil even one criteria of her bail.

Sherrie Charlton-Wesley, 27, of Elizabeth Down, was due to appear in the Adelaide District Court after the prosecution asked for her bail to be revoked.

When the matter was called, Tim McGrath, for Charlton-Wesley, told the judge Joanna Fuller he had not heard from his client.

With a psychology appointment set by her lawyer looming ahead of her sentencing, the writing was on the wall for Mr McGrath who told the court he had lost all contact.

“I don’t have any explanation for that, I’m afraid,” he said.

Charlton-Wesley and her former partner Bradley Justin Staude, 29, also of Elizabeth Downs, were charged after an ambulance was called for the 20-month-old toddler when she ingested the street drug fantasy or GHB.

The court has previously heard the toddler allegedly ingested the drug at 10.30pm on a night in March 2020, but it was not until four hours later the ambulance was called.

Staude pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal neglect in November last year.

Charlton-Wesley eventually pleaded guilty to the charge in May.

Lisa Dunlop, prosecuting, told the court Charlton-Wesley, had not once signed in at the Christies Beach police station – something she legally had to do to stay out of jail.

The court heard those instructions had been delivered to Charlton-Wesley in June and then reiterated in August.

“While Ms Charlton-Wesley was in contact with her solicitor, at least the matter was progressing towards the outcome that we all need, which is to bring the matter to a head,” she said.

“But … in addition to noncompliance, she's actually never once signed in.

“And now that she has lost contact with her solicitor and missed her (psychology) appointment and caused her to get another delay, it’s for that reason the director has made this application.”

Judge Fuller agreed, ordering a warrant for Charlton-Wesley’s arrest and revoked her bail.
