A thug held a knife to his ex-partner’s throat, and unclipped her seatbelt and opened her car door at 140km/h in a terrifying domestic violence rampage, a court has heard.
Tymon Harold Murphy, 30, awaits his fate from custody after he then attempted to dissuade her from giving evidence.
During sentencing submissions on Monday, Judge Paul Muscat said some of the assaults, including holding a knife to his partner’s throat, were “serious in the extreme”.
Judge Muscat told the District Court a sentence needed to be imposed to deter Murphy and other men from behaving that way.
During Murphy’s unsuccessful bail application last year, the court heard he assaulted his partner on multiple occasions.
The court heard Murphy and his then-partner had an argument in May 2022 and he allegedly ended up headbutting her face, causing a split lip.
“She thought she may have broken one or two of her teeth,” the prosecutor said.
The court heard Murphy and his ex-partner got into another argument later that month.
“She (the victim) states he was driving really fast around the Ingle Farm area, up to speeds of 140km/h,” the prosecutor said.
“She says that while they were going that speed, he leant over and opened her door and unclipped her seat belt.”
Murphy and his partner arrived at her house and she told him to leave.
However, Mr Murphy went inside and grabbed a knife from the kitchen.
“He’s approached her, pushed the blade against the left side of her throat,” the prosecutor said.
Murphy, of Hackham West, pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including endangering life, assaults and preventing a person to attend as a witness.
Murphy’s counsel previously told the court he denied the offending and the allegations were made up as a result of Murphy breaking up with the victim.
On Monday, Peter Hill, said Murphy, a father-of-two, had serious mental health issues for which he was taking medication.
Judge Muscat ordered a psychiatric report to find out more about Murphy’s schizoaffective disorder diagnosis.
The charges were adjourned until December.
