Not many people can say they’ve been to space twice, and even less toy echidnas have tackled that feat.

But Anstey the toy echidna has taken two 37,000m trips up into space attached to a balloon, which eventually explodes sending her back to SA.

Both of Anstey’s journeys ended with crash landings in the Murray Mallee region, all captured on the Go-Pro attached to her during her trip.

Tea Tree Gully library community events and history officer David Brooks said Anstey’s latest landing earlier this month was eventful.

“This time she landed in a tree (near Barmera) which wasn’t ideal,” he said.

The launch on July 7 was facilitated as part of a kid’s space group in which kids aged 10 to 15 meet monthly with space experts and professionals.

“It all culminated into sending Anstey into space again and it was great fun. If we do it again we’ll get the kids on the 3D printer and get them to design and choose what they send into space.”

Mr Brooks and the space group have big dreams for Anstey and hope to launch her into space for a third time next year.

“We’re shooting to get her on the space station, that would be the ultimate aim. It’s just finding the right person to talk to at NASA.”
