THREE Salisbury Football Club players have been chosen in All-Australian teams — just five months after the club launched its first women’s teams.
THREE of Salisbury Football Club’s female players have been chosen in All-Australian teams just five months after the club launched its first women’s teams.
Shae Gundlach and Sarah Allan will travel to New Zealand next month to represent Australia in an international under-18 AFL tournament.
They are the only two South Australians chosen to fly the flag for Australia.
Kyesha Christensen, 15, was also chosen in an under-16 all-Australian team after representing SA in a tournament in Sydney in July.
Salisbury Football Club women’s captain Emma Gibson said it was a massive achievement for all three girls and for the club.
“They’re all stars,” Gibson said.
“It’s unbelievable watching them play.
“Sarah is just an awesome player — she can kick from the 50 and has kicked a lot of goals for us.”
The club’s adult team will reach the SA Women’s Football League division two finals in either second or third place.
The club’s male division three team finished in ninth place.
Gibson, who works as the SANFL’s female football co-ordinator, moved from playing for Central District last year to set up under-16, under-18 and adult women’s teams at Salisbury Football Club.
She said it had been “the best year of footy ever”.
“We couldn’t have been more successful if we tried,” she said.
Shae, 17, recommended other women join the sport.
“I like the adrenalin and the physical contact,” Shae said.
“I just love it.
“I grew up watching and I’ve just been brought up with it.”
Salisbury Football Club is considering introducing under-12 and under-14 girls’ teams next year.
