Tea Tree Gully Council is again considering selling part of a Modbury reserve to make way for a shopping centre expansion.

Clovercrest Shopping Centre owner Dean Kyros has asked the council to review its decision to knock back his offer to buy part of Sir Frank Berryman Reserve.

Tea Tree Gully Council will consider a $1.76 million offer from Clovercrest Shopping Centre to expand into Frank Berryman Reserve.

Mr Kyros wants to buy 5475sq m of the park to build a two-storey complex with shops, a cafe and residential apartments.

The council in August last year voted 7-4 to reject Mr Kyros’s offer to buy the land for

$1.36 million plus a further $400,000 to upgrade existing community facilities.

However, the council will again consider at its meeting on Tuesday night Mr Kyros’s offer.

A council report said proceeds from the sale could go towards transport initiatives in the area and to upgrade the Burragah Recreation Centre.

In a letter to the council’s chief executive John Moyle in August last year, Mr Kyros said a centre extension would be a “unique opportunity” to improve the area.

However, nearby resident Nadine Bubner, who has been part of a community campaign to block the sale, said her stance remained unchanged.

“We do not want Sir Frank Berrman Reserve built on and destroyed in any way,” Ms Bubner said.

“It should remain as community land for which it was intended.”

Mr Kyros has been contacted for comment.
