Proposal for paid domestic violence leave

A man has had another bail bid knocked back after he allegedly bashed his former partner with a baseball bat until she was “spitting blood,” a court has heard.

Steven Shaun Butler, 32, was denied home detention bail for a third time in the District Court on Friday, after police allege he committed a horrific series of domestic violence acts.

The court heard the alleged victim was Mr Butler’s ex-partner, who he shares children with.

The court heard Mr Butler and his partner had gotten into an argument at Salisbury North in April, 2018, where he allegedly doused her in petrol and held a lighter near her.

Mr Butler allegedly assaulted her again on July 8, 2021 at Hillbank.

“The complainant awoke with the accused standing over her with a baseball bat,” Judge Michael Durrant said.

“She says she blacked out after being hit with that bat and came to in the shower spitting blood.”

The court heard the alleged victim climbed over the back fence and rang police from a neighbour’s house.

Police observed she had multiple bruises over her body.

Judge Durrant said the defence case was the alleged victim fabricated the assaults as a “woman scorned” after she found out Mr Butler was having another relationship, with the woman who is his current partner.

Mr Butler, of Hillbank, has pleaded not guilty to multiple offences, including endangering life and assault.

He will face trial in the District Court next year.

Judge Durrant said Mr Butler’s history of similar offending shows he has a tendency to deal with relationship problems violently.

The court previously heard Mr Butler plays for a northern suburbs soccer club, as well as coaches children.

Judge Durrant said he couldn’t be persuaded the alleged victim wouldn’t be at risk of further offending and denied Mr Butler bail.
