Smoking to be banned at all of Tea Tree Gully’s dog parks
Smoking will be banned at all Tea Tree Gully’s three dog parks after the idea was rubber-stamped this week.
Smoking will be banned in Tea Tree Gully Council’s three dog parks.
The council voted on Tuesday night to ban smoking at Holden Hill’s Bentley Reserve Dog Playground, Pet Park at Chestnut Reserve in Golden Grove and Ridgehaven’s Ashley Ave Dog Park.
Cr Olivia Savvas said she had received plenty of feedback from park users with concerns about discarded cigarette butts being an issue for dogs at Bentley Reserve.
“I take my dogs there, you see a lot of butts discarded around the place,” Cr Savvas said.
“You have the issue of dogs eating butts.
“This is about creating a positive, cleaner and family-friendly environment.”
Cr Rob Unger said it was a community-led campaign.
“This motion was a result of community concerns being raised by residents of Holden Hill … (relating) to the health and safety of dog park users, as well as litter,” Cr Unger said.
It is unclear when the ban will officially come into place.
The council’s chief executive officer John Moyle said in July bans might not stop at the council’s three dog parks.
“It could be expanded to other areas,” Mr Moyle told elected members last month.
However, the council has no plans to enforce further smoke-free areas at this stage.
Smoking is also banned at Waterworld and the St Agnes Recreation Area.
