A $7.3 MILLION six-storey carpark is set to transform the heart of Playford.
Playford Council’s development assessment panel has approved the multi-level building’s construction – at the corner of Main North Rd and Philip Highway, Elizabeth.
It will hold 360 vehicles, servicing Playford CBD, which is currently under construction and includes Prince George Plaza and Playford Medical Hub.
A developer has long-held plans too for an ice arena, subject to government funding and approval.
Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty welcomed the carpark decision.
“The 360 parks over six storeys will provide even more parking access to our growing community and unlock our CBD precinct,” Mr Docherty said.
“It will employ more than 100 people in the construction and running of the facility.”
An option to construct a pedestrian footbridge from the carpark to a future development was also approved by the panel last week.
The State Government announced earlier this year that it would contribute almost $1.5 million towards the project, with the remainder of the construction costs being covered by the sale of development sites around the CBD.
The council is in negotiation with contractors, with the contract expected to be awarded by the end of October.
Construction will start in early December.
The carpark is part of a plan which aims to attract more than $400 million from private developers and the council to transform the area into a business district.
Work on a $21 million health precinct is expected to start in January and will be opening its doors in late 2019.
The precinct will include a fertility clinic, optometrist, cardiologist, GPs and mental health services.
The ice arena would include two Olympic-sized rinks and a rock climbing wall.
That project, headed by Ice Rinks Adelaide, is awaiting funding from the State Government and approval from the State Commission Assessment Panel.
The two projects have the potential to provide more than 500 jobs.
