Scott Glacken used firearm in neighbourhood dispute at Elizabeth Park

After a neighbourhood dispute “reached its peak”, a man used a steel pipe in a brawl and told his neighbour he was going to shoot him before firing a shotgun.

'Scary number' of illegal guns in Australia

A neighbourhood dispute “reached its peak” when a man fired a gun to scare his neighbours after a violent brawl.

Scott Aaron Glacken, 30, acted “entirely inappropriately” when he escalated the situation by collecting the illegal firearm from his garage.

Kimberley Ballans, for the prosecution, told the Adelaide District Court on Tuesday that Glacken used a steel pipe during an affray between him and his Elizabeth Park neighbours on May 10, 2020.

Glacken, who threatened to shoot one of the men during the brawl, collected a firearm from his garage later that day.

“He was willing to employ it to invoke fear on his neighbours,” Ms Ballans said.

“He deliberately retrieved the firearm and discharged it when his neighbours were in close proximity to him.”

The court heard police searched Glacken’s house and found marijuana plants and weapons in his bedroom which he said were “for his enemies”.

Glacken pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including affray and discharging a firearm to annoy or frighten.

Edward Jolly, for Glacken, told the court there had been “escalating aggression” with the neighbours and it “reached its peak” on the day.

“Mr Glacken and his family … had long term, ongoing issues with those neighbours,” he said.

“He acted entirely inappropriately on the day in question.”

The court heard Glacken suffered significant injuries from the incident and was hospitalised for two weeks.

Mr Jolly pushed for a suspended sentence, saying Glacken had completely turned his life around since the offending and owned a 3D printing business.

However, Ms Ballans said the offending was far too serious for anything but immediate jail.

Judge Joanne Tracey will sentence Glacken next month.
