A samurai sword has been found within walking distance of three Golden Grove schools, raising concerns over the safety of local children.

Tea Tree Gully councillor Brett Rankine stumbled across the sword among bushes on the corner of The Golden Way and The Grove Way on Thursday morning while doing his daily, community rubbish run.

He handed it in to the Golden Grove police station not long after.

However, Cr Rankine said it was a concern with children regularly walking past the junction on the way to school.

The intersection is within walking distance of Golden Grove High School and Pedare Christian and Gleeson colleges.

“I was really concerned about the potential for someone to be seriously injured,” Cr Rankine said.

“Children walk daily to and from Goldenfields (Reserve), to and from school every day.

“A young child may not understand the harm it could cause and either hurt themselves or seriously hurt someone else.

“It was extremely irresponsible to leave this weapon lying in the bushes and when anyone could get hold of it.”

SA Police confirmed the sword was handed in but declined to comment.
