SALISBURY West has been demoted to the amateur league’s eighth-tier – five months after reaching a division four grand final – for failing to sign enough players with recent football experience.

The Tigers needed to meet a league requirement imposed on four clubs of registering at least 50 players before February 15 so they could be accepted into division three.

Those players had to have lined up in an AFL-affiliated competition in at least four games over the past two seasons.

Amateur league chief executive John Kernahan said officials investigated the Tigers’ list and determined they had not fulfilled that obligation.

The amateur league board last night ratified the decision to demote Salisbury West to the eighth-tier C1 competition, where it would field one team.

“They were required to present 50 players who had played four matches in either of the last two years and they had 33,” Kernahan said.

“It’s disappointing.”

Salisbury West’s slide comes after a roller-coaster 2014.

The Tigers celebrated their 50th anniversary, lost the division four grand final and earned promotion, but had a mass exodus after some players were not paid in full.

Salisbury West coach Darrell McIntyre said he was shattered.

“I know that we would have had enough players but now we’ve got to start all over again,” McIntyre said.

“The hard work ahead is not necessarily the worry, it’s ensuring the survival of the club at this stage and then going from there.”

Kernahan said the other three clubs which needed to register 50 players – Kilburn, Mitchell Park and Flinders University – all did so.
