Salisbury Council will spend $1.6 million on a community safety strategy to tackle rising numbers of hoons, vandals and illegal dumpers of rubbish.

The council approved its Community Safety Implementation Plan on Monday night, which includes nearly $500,000 for graffiti removal this financial year.

The Messenger revealed in March the plan would also include a portable CCTV camera trial in hot spots in a bid to catch hoon drivers and illegal dumpers.

During the $65,000 trial, eight cameras will be deployed in pairs at various locations which have been analysed for incidents involving illegal dumping, misuse of vehicles and graffiti attacks.

Locations include four streets in Paralowie.

A comprehensive report presented to elected members late last year found police data had identified Salisbury, Burton, Para Hills West, Parafield and Salisbury South as the areas with the most crime.

The report said figures for some crimes – such as robbery, theft, fraud and property damage – averaged up to 26 per cent higher in Salisbury than the rest of the state.

Meanwhile, there were, on average, 11,000 offences committed in the Salisbury Council area each year for the eight years to 2017/18, with rises in theft, fraud and deception charges, the new plan read.

Cr Chad Buchanan said the strategy was needed, with graffiti removal and illegal dumping costing the council nearly $1.2 million each year.

“Council is taking action to catch illegal dumpers and graffiti vandals in the act with the introduction of portable CCTV located in hot-spot areas reported by local residents,” Cr Buchanan said.

“As recently as this week, residents have contacted me about a graffiti spree and illegal dumping in Paralowie and I have been able to have the streets concerned added to our trial.”
