A popular retirement community hub has been bulldozed at Elizabeth to make way for a $50 million luxury hotel.
The Grenville Centre was levelled over the past fortnight as part of a program by Playford Council to transform the northern suburbs through capital projects.
The program was being overseen by former chief executive Mal Hemmerling before he was sacked by councillors over a workplace issue in December.
Another one of his key projects, a $40 million ice arena, has been put on hold after a expert report said it exposed ratepayers to financial risk.
Mr Hemmerling spent several years trying to find developers for the ice arena and a hotel, which he wanted built in the Elizabeth CBD.
Among the key clientele for the hotel would be high-ranking military officials visiting the nearby Edinburgh RAAF base, particularly those from the US Air Force.
The hotel’s developer, Andrew Russell-Price, of Prizac Developments, has paid a deposit for the site of the Grenvelle Centre, which was cleared last month.
The land is next to a multi-storey carpark which council built with its own funds predominantly to service the hotel.
The Northern Weekly understands Mr Russell-Price is well-advanced with plans to call tenders for the construction of the hotel.
Mr Russell-Price has told council staff he has signed a contract with a well-known international chain which will operate the hotel.
Council has approved plans for a seven-storey building with 204 rooms, dining, conference and function rooms, entertainment areas, a swimming pool and a rooftop bar.
The Grenville Centre will be relocated to a new building on the eastern edge of the plaza on Playford Blvd.
