An Elizabeth Downs man who allegedly assaulted another man with an axe – leaving him with a serious head injury – has an IQ of between 50 and 60, a court has heard.

Police allege about 3.45am on Saturday morning, a 28-year-old man from Paralowie was assaulted with an axe near Campbell Road, Elizabeth Downs.

The alleged victim went to a friend’s home and was then taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital.

He was then transferred to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for surgery and is in a serious condition.

Then, just before 10.30am that morning, Paul Frost, 31, was arrested at his Elizabeth Downs home and has since been charged with aggravated assault causing serious harm.

Magistrate Brian Nitschke said a report would reveal “any intellectual disability from which this man may suffer”.

“I’ve heard no facts, I’ve heard no background,” Mr Nitschke said.

“It may in the end provide some information. I want to make sure we have enough information to assist.”

Frost was remanded in custody and will face the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on September 11 for a bail application.

Police are also seeking further information from the public about the alleged incident.
