North East Public Transport Study recommends extending O-Bahn to Golden Grove, Stephen Knoll says

A major, long-awaited traffic study recommends extending the O-Bahn to Golden Grove — but the report itself may not even be out until next year.

A major transport study has recommended extending the O-Bahn to Golden Grove, Infrastructure Minister Stephan Knoll has said.

Mr Knoll said the long-awaited North East Public Transport Study — which is yet to be released — had advised the busway should be extended from Tea Tree Plaza to the Golden Grove park ‘n’ ride.

He said the study recommended a “number of options” for the extension, but would not elaborate further.

“That’s precisely what we need to work through,” Mr Knoll said.

Mr Knoll said there was no guarantee the study would be released this year.

“That’s a matter for Cabinet,” he said. “I’m pushing for it to be out in the open as soon as possible.”

Tea Tree Gully Council Mayor Kevin Knight said an O-Bahn extension would be a “win for our community”.

“Anything that improves access to public transport, convenience and travel times is welcomed,” Mr Knight said.

“While I still see the Modbury park ‘n’ ride expansion as a priority, reducing the reliance on this facility will hopefully make it easier for residents that commute to the city.”

Meanwhile, Mr Knoll said improved Golden Grove park ‘n’ ride facilities was “next cab off the rank” after Paradise was completed in the middle of next year.

The Government allocated $18.5 million for its election promise to build park ‘n’ rides at Paradise and Golden Grove.

However he declined to say if the Government would upgrade the existing park ‘n’ ride at Golden Grove or move it to a new location.

“Dealing with the Golden Grove park ‘n’ ride will take some pressure off Modbury,” Mr Knoll said.

However, he added building a second park ‘n’ ride at Modbury was “one of the logical next steps”.

“But it is only one part of the parking issue which exists around Modbury,” he said.
