Modbury Soccer Club’s Charlie Bowman scores six goals in one game to break club record
MODBURY Soccer Club’s Charlie Bowman jokes he will have a stern word with a linesman after scoring six goals in a game but having two more disallowed.
MODBURY Soccer Club’s Charlie Bowman jokes he is keen to have a stern word with a State League linesman.
The 28-year-old midfielder scored a club record six goals in the Jets’ 12-1 win over Gawler at Modbury on February 28.
But Bowman, of Glen Osmond, says he could have had more if two goals were not disallowed after being adjudged offside.
“I’ll have to get on to the linesman,” Bowman jests.
“I’ll definitely go with I was robbed a goal or two.
“It is pretty cool having a club record, especially at an old club like Modbury.
“I’ve never considered myself to be a goalscorer, funnily enough.”
Bowman scored his first goal in the 25th minute after a shot from the edge of the box, completed his hat-trick 10 minutes later and netted his last goal in the game’s dying stages.
“I jokingly said to the coaches, ‘if you take me off at half-time I’m never speaking to you again’.
“Everything was falling to me and if I was an on-form finisher, I could have finished with 10.”
Despite his efforts, Bowman fell well short of the league’s all-time individual record of 13 goals — set by the now-defunct Austria Soccer Club’s Roman Kaufman during his side’s 33-0 drubbing of Murray Bridge in 1962.
Bowman says his teammates and coach, former striker Jason Trimboli, were key to his goal haul.
“The service I was getting was spot on.
“But I was also getting into better positions than I have the last few years and having a striker for a coach has probably helped that.”
Bowman grew up in London before moving to SA in 2001.
The following year he signed with Adelaide Hills Hawks.
He won a league title in 2008 and the State League Player of the Year award in 2011/12 at the Hawks but opted to join Trimboli at Modbury at the start of last season.
