A once successful career woman involved herself in a commercial enterprise selling illicit drugs to cover her own mounting debts.

Kiera Lee Scott, 31, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court after a methamphetamine addiction led to her downward spiral.

The court heard Scott and her co-accused attempted to enter the Mobilong Prison at Murray Bridge on February 29, 2020.

“When you were doing so, you were screened by a drug detection dog. The dog detected drugs on both of you,” Judge Paul Slattery said during sentencing.

Scott’s car was searched and two balloons were seized, as well as methamphetamine, a homemade taser and an axe.

“These balloons contained 20 buprenorphine strips and 25 naloxone strips,” Judge Slattery said.

Police also found three mobile phones, $3000 in cash and a tick list.

“On one of those mobile phones, police identified frequent messages which were consistent with you being involved in drug trafficking,” Judge Slattery said.

“Two days before this offending, you had telephone contact with another Mobilong prisoner in which you used codes to ask him if he could help you find another drug distributor.”

Police attended Scott’s Paralowie house on June 6, 2020.

They found 28 buprenorphine strips, methamphetamine, $6500 cash and bank cards and official documents in the names of other people.

“Police also located 789g of 1,4-butanediol in a jerry can outside of the house,” Judge Slattery said.

Police found several drug dealing messages on Scott’s phone.

Scott, of Paralowie, had previously pleaded guilty to multiple counts of drug trafficking.

The court heard Scott, who was born in Broken Hill and had a “happy childhood” had previously worked at a travel agency.

“You were successful in this role, however, your position was terminated because of your drug addiction,” Judge Slattery said.

The court heard Scott had started using methamphetamine from the age of 15.

“You were overconfident in your success and you believed that you would be able to control your methamphetamine use,” Judge Slattery said.

The court heard Scott started a relationship with a man who was a heavy methamphetamine user in 2018.

“Around this time, you say you began supplying methamphetamine to friends to cover the costs of your addiction,” Judge Scott said.

“You also say that he and his friends often took the money you had earned from supplying methamphetamine to your friends, which led to an increasing drug debt.”

The court heard Scott was jailed for over four years in April after a police search uncovered 135g of crystal in her handbag, which contained 90g of methamphetamine.

“You were involved in a commercial enterprise in which you sold illicit drugs in street deal quantities and … you had the capacity to supply larger amounts of drugs,” Judge Slattery said.

“You are more than merely a street level trafficker.”

The court heard Scott feels shame and remorse for her offending and has been engaging in drug rehabilitation courses while in custody.

Adding on Scott’s previous jail term, Judge Slattery sentenced Scott to 11 years jail, with a non-parole period of six years and two months.

The sentence was backdated to October 30, 2020.
