HUNGRY Jack’s will open a restaurant in the northern suburbs, despite its initial bid being rejected by Salisbury Council a year ago.
Under a new deal with Parafield Airport, the fast food giant will build a store next to the planned Masters Home Improvement, Officeworks and retail centre at the Main North Rd site.
It comes after Salisbury Council rejected a development application in April, last year, for the Hungry Jack’s store to be built at the Coles Express service station at the corner of Main North and McIntyre roads, amid community concerns about increased traffic and wafting burger smells.
The Parafield Airport restaurant is on Federal Government-owned land, and therefore did not require approval from Salisbury Council.
Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge supported the development.
“I welcome any new development that is happening in this city,” Ms Aldridge said.
“New developments means work for local people and Hungry Jack’s do employ local kids, so I think it will be good for our city, good for jobs and good for young people.”
An airport spokesman said the 40-seat restaurant would be “suitably placed at an accessible site along Main North Rd” and “complements existing activity” at the airport.
The Masters Home Improvement development is expected to create about 300 construction jobs during the building phase, and a further 130 retail jobs when it opens.
Deputy Mayor and Levels Ward Councillor Brad Vermeer said the project he was pleased the development was not near homes.
“The development itself is situated on the airport site and not within or adjacent to a residential area so the likelihood of disturbances is minimal,” Cr Vermeer said.
“I would be supportive of this development specifically because it would hopefully provide a number of jobs in the local community, particularly for our youth.”
Treasurer Tom Koustantonis launched the development at a sod turning ceremony on June 12.
“I welcome Masters’ commitment to South Australia and look forward to seeing more
construction and ongoing retail jobs created as a result of its expansion.”
