A man was allegedly forced to become a meth cook after his family was threatened if he did not comply with instructions, a court has heard.

Graham Christian Anthony Glover, 37, was granted home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in the blackmail.

A prosecutor opposed bail, for the safety of the alleged victim and his family.

The heard Glover, his co-accused, Brett Matthew Cugley, 36, and the alleged victim were introduced at a Brahma Lodge address in August 2021.

“At this address the co-accused told the victim he had to cook and source chemicals, glassware and manufacture methamphetamine,” the prosecutor said last week.

“The co-accused said to the victim if you don’t help us, ‘I’ll go after your family and you’ and other words to that effect.”

The court heard the alleged victim was in fear that if he did not do what they said, they would carry out their threats.

The alleged victim obtained the materials and met Cugley at an address to begin the process of manufacturing methamphetamine.

“The victim informed the co-accused that this process would take three days,” the prosecutor said.

“The co-accused administered methamphetamine to the victim and forced him to keep producing for 24-hours.”

The laboratory was then moved to an address to a Davoren Park where the alleged victim and Cugley allegedly began the next steps of the production.

The alleged victim was eventually able to go home.

There are no allegations that Glover was present during the manufacturing of the methamphetamine.

Glover and Cugley, both of Fairview Park, are charged with blackmail and manufacturing a controlled drug.

The court heard Glover has previously been sentenced to a jail term for assault causing harm against police.

“The defendant does not have a good history of compliance with court orders,” the prosecutor said.

Timothy Clarke, for Glover, told the court he had two children and was employed.

“The strictness of home detention is sufficient to satisfy the court that my client will attend,” he said.

“He has the support of family around him.”

Mr Clarke said Glover could live with his mother if released on bail.

Magistrate Michelle Sutcliffe granted Glover home detention bail and adjourned the charges until February.
