Eagles Lacrosse Club hopes to lease Charles Cane Reserve to find home in centenary season

EAGLES Lacrosse Club says it will remain homeless in its centenary season next year unless it can lease Prospect's Charles Cane Reserve.

EAGLES Lacrosse Club says it will remain homeless in its centenary season next year unless it can lease Prospect's Charles Cane Reserve.

Eagles president Matt Larwood said the 99-year old club has had more than three decades without a permanent base and stints at grounds in Renown Park, Croydon, North Adelaide and Woodville North.

The Eagles played at Finsbury Reserve, Woodville North, last year but their sublease at that venue has expired.

Prospect Council has called for expressions of interest to lease Charles Cane Reserve during winter because Ovingham Football Club's 10-year deal expires on March 31.

It has led to a scramble among local clubs for the Churchill Rd oval, which is one of just three in the council area.

The Eagles have applied for a shared lease with Ovingham, which has been based there since the 1950s, and Broadview Football Club.

"We haven't had a permanent base in the time that I've been at the club, which is 38 years," Larwood said.

"If we were successful it would mean we could better equip our children, keep playing costs down and develop our young players more effectively.

"The basic consequence of not getting the lease is we'll enter our 100th year without anywhere to play.

"Even if we found somewhere else, it won't be the sort of place that will allow us to build and grow our club because it probably won't have changerooms or clubrooms."

Larwood said the ground's dimensions and location was perfect for the club, which had 60 of its 150 members living in the Prospect area.

Amateur soccer clubs BOSA, Adelaide Villa and Adelaide Star are also vying to lease the oval.

Prospect community development manager Brendan Lott said the council wanted tenants that would maximise the oval's use, attract residents to join and improve the amenities.

It will decide on the new lease at its November 26 meeting.
