A judge had a stern warning for a man who deformed his girlfriend’s nose in a bloody attack, saying he wasn’t convinced of his remorse.

Korbin Blane, 20, was told in court he clearly had an anger management problem after his terrifying domestic violence rampage.

During Blane’s bail application in November, the court heard a witness found the victim bleeding from her face and on the ground of a Morphett St apartment building on September 3.

“When this witness approached her, she noted that her nose was completely displaced and that the complainant was very distressed,” the prosecutor said.

The 18-year-old woman was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital where her nose was treated over the next few days.

Blane, of Elizabeth, pleaded guilty to causing harm with intent and dissuading a witness – after trying to convince his girlfriend from custody to drop the charges.

He was also initially charged with choking, but the charge was withdrawn by prosecution in March.

“So where did he get this view that he can treat his domestic partner in this appalling way?” Judge Paul Muscat asked during sentencing submissions in the District Court.

Sean Nottle, for Blane, told the court his client’s inability to regulate his emotions resulted in his violent outbursts – which were behavioural mechanisms he learnt in his childhood.

“I don’t understand how he learned in his childhood it’s okay to assault a domestic partner and treat her as he did,” Judge Muscat replied.

“And in fact what is concerning is in the prison calls he’s blaming her for being in prison.”

Mr Nottle said Blane now recognised the wrongfulness of his conduct and was sorry for his actions – including having written a letter of apology.

Judge Muscat said he wasn’t entirely convinced of Blane’s remorse.

“In fact Mr Evans (a psychologist) has hypothesised that the remorse that Mr Blane, for want of a better word demonstrated, was an attempt at manipulation,” he said.

Judge Muscat said he didn’t accept Blane’s account that he blacked out and had no memory of what he did to his partner.

Mr Nottle said Blane planned to live with his father in Port Augusta once released from custody.

“He would like to get out, get a job, stop drinking, stop taking drugs,” he said.

Judge Muscat told Blane he clearly had an anger management problem but it wasn’t too late for him and he could still turn his life around.

“You need to control your anger otherwise you’re only going to end up back in prison time and time again,” he said.

Blane will be sentenced in September.
