THE Transport Department has promised to cut grass and weeds on main road median strips in the northeast by the end of next week following a complaint from Tea Tree Gully Council.
Cr Lucas Jones, with the support of fellow councillors, requested staff write to the Transport Department earlier this month to ask for grass medians on main roads to be cut immediately because they looked “disgusting”.
Main road median strip maintenance is the responsibility of State Government.
“Residents in the area take pride in the appearance of our roads and verges, and they are embarrassed with the current state of verges along main roads,” Cr Jones told the Leader Messenger.
“I walked up the verge on North East Rd at Tea Tree Gully ... and it came up to my hips, and I’m a pretty tall guy.”
“The verges on our main roads in the City of Tea Tree Gully at the moment are disgusting and completely unacceptable.”
A Transport Department spokesman said told the Leader Messenger it had been contacted by the council about the median strips and staff mowed North East Rd medians on Thursday.
“The remaining medians on (Transport Department) maintained roads in the Tea Tree Gully Council area will be completed by the end of next week, assuming no further delays due to weather,” the spokesman said.
“The recent storms have delayed mowing due to the wet weather and the need to prioritise resources to undertake clean up and storm damage rectification works to ensure the safety of road users.”
Cr Justin Hanson acknowledged there had been a lot of rain in the past few weeks but said tall growth had been an ongoing issue.
He said residents assumed cutting grass was the council’s responsibility.
“It needs regular attention not just a mow every now and then,” he said.
