A northern suburbs CFS volunteer told police he was simply testing a child’s “stranger danger awareness” after he offered her $10 to show him her breasts, a court heard.
Gary Omond, 37, was sexually motivated by his vile offending that left a young girl no longer able to trust men.
During sentencing, the District Court heard the 12-year-old victim was at Omond’s house in October 2021.
The court heard Omond asked the victim if she wanted to earn $10 by showing him her breasts.
“She said ‘no, never’ and you replied ‘good girl’,” Judge Jane Schammer said.
The victim later told her grandmother what Omond had done and he was arrested.
“Upon your arrest, you told police that you ‘didn’t even do anything’ and that you ‘wanted to test her stranger danger awareness’,” Judge Schammer said.
“You said she declined, swiped your hand away and said that she was aware of stranger danger.
“You said that you then hugged her and said ‘congratulations, you passed’.”
Omond, of Craigmore, pleaded guilty to communicating with intention of procuring a child for sexual activity.
The court heard the victim can no longer trust men and Omond significantly changed her view of the world.
Omond was jailed in August after being found guilty of maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a different child.
The court heard Omond met that victim in 2016 and she began visiting his house regularly and staying overnight.
During some of these visits, Omond would commit sexual acts against the girl, who was aged between seven and nine at the time of his offending.
The court heard Omond, who served 22 years with the Country Fire Service, was remorseful for his offending.
The court heard Omond’s partner remained supportive of him and they had a young child together.
Judge Schammer said Omond now accepted his offending was sexually motivated and the diagnosis of a pedophilic disorder.
Judge Schammer sentenced Omond to two months jail, which was added onto his previous sentence and resulted in six years and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and eight months.
The sentence was backdated to August 12, 2022.
