The Hills and Fleurieu region was the most deadly recording 17 of South Australia’s 93 fatal crashes in 2020.

Adelaide’s southern suburbs endured the most serious injury crashes with 158 incidents.

Property damage crashes were most prevalent in the Adelaide CBD where 282 minor collisions involving 602 vehicles.

Gepps Cross, which has a major intersection, came in second place with 100 crashes and Prospect followed close behind.

Canstar finance expert Steve Mickenbecker said the high number of accidents in Adelaide was not surprising.

“Densely populated metropolitan areas typically have more vehicles on the roads and heavier traffic, creating the perfect storm for a rush hour rear-ender,” Mr Mickenbecker said.

“So it goes without saying that Adelaide city had the highest number of prangs in South Australia in 2020.”

Mr Mickenbecker said it was best to avoid driving in densely populated areas at peak hour and keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists plus taxis and rideshares pulling over to pick up passengers.

For those who find themselves at the scene of a crash he shared tips to make the insurance and legal processes simpler.

“It’s crucial to exchange details with the other driver as well, including their license number, registration, phone number, home address and insurance details,” he said.

“You should also take photos of both vehicles and you’ll then need to notify your insurer, who will walk you through the claims process and answer any questions you might have about the next steps.”
