Campbelltown Council has unveiled the final designs for a $10 million upgrade of the Max Amber Sportsfield at Paradise.
The centrepiece of the project will be a new double-storey building to be used by the Athelstone Football Club, known as the Raggies, and community groups.
Elected members were due to vote on the designs at their meeting on Tuesday night, which went ahead with members of the public relocated to a separate room.
It is the second attempt by the council to redevelop the Max Amber Sportsfield, with another attempt several years ago being shelved due to community opposition.
Under the latest plans, the Raggies and the Athelstone Tennis Club will get new clubrooms, along with all-purpose outdoor netball courts and extra parking.
Some elected members initially objected to sending the plans out for community consultation but changed their minds following a tour of the council’s capital works projects after the 2018 local government elections.
Three councillors subsequently joined a working party which oversaw the development of the plans, including energy sustainability, disability access and community use.
The project is being funded by ratepayers and a $5 million grant promised by the successful Liberal candidate for Sturt, James Stevens, before the last federal election.
Work on the new clubrooms is expected to start later this year.
