Campbelltown Council is proposing to build a state-of-the-art, $2.5 million “super playground” in Thorndon Park.

A flying fox, a spinning carousel, water play facilities, a “teenage space” and better disability access were just some of the suggestions to come out of the first round of community consultation, with around 450 people providing comment.

The council’s youth advisory committee also suggested the inclusion of an outdoor study space with a mix of seating for studying and socialising, plus table tennis and basketball facilities and Wi-Fi charging stations.

However, some residents raised concerns with anti-social behaviour including bullying, alcohol consumption, damage of equipment and general security.

Mayor Jill Whittaker said it would be an inclusive playground with children of all abilities able to play beside each other.

“The large metallic birds are both playful and artistic, building on the theme of the park’s bountiful birdlife, and ensuring a play experience like no other,” Ms Whittaker said.

“It aims to cater for small and large children including the more challenging aspects for adolescents.”

She encouraged local residents to have a say during stage two of consultation which ends on October 2.

“It is one our most loved and visited playgrounds,” Ms Whittaker said.

“The respondents (during consultation) helped develop this concept.”

The council has not announced anticipated timelines for works.

No funding has been allocated to the proposal apart from $50,000 for detailed design.
