A disability pensioner battling to stay above the poverty line says he can’t understand why someone torched his cars in a cruel attack that has destroyed his only transport ahead of upcoming medical operations.
Peter Unsworth, 61, said his cars morphed into a fierce “fireball” at Campbelltown on Tuesday night when they were targeted by an arsonist in a “bloody dog act”.
“There she was on fire, it was a fireball, popping and cracking,” he said.
“Absolutely devastating… we’re looking at thousands and thousands of dollars and I’m on a disability support pension.
“I’m stuffed, I’ve got operations coming up on my hands, I’ve got all sorts of things that I need to do but I have no car.”
The blaze erupted in the carpark of a unit complex on Hambledon Road just before 10pm.
Mr Unsworth said he knew something was wrong when he heard neighbours screaming his name.
“Absolutely devastated to see it on fire,” he said.
“There were flames probably about four or five metres. Everything was going up.”
The blaze was extinguished by firefighters, but not before Mr Unsworth’s white Hyundai Excel and gold Mazda Tribute was destroyed.
On Wednesday, Mr Unsowrth became emotional as he surveyed the wreckages.
“Why would anyone do that. I’d like to see them (be) responsible for what they’ve done. It’s a bloody dog act,” he said.
“Grow up, get a life. There’s no need to do that to someone like myself who struggles living on the poverty line.”
Residents in the complex said they would rally behind Mr Unsworth.
Neighbour Gwenda Hayward said she was upset because “Peter’s a battler like all of us here”.
“I feel sorry for him. (The person responsible) will get your just desserts,” she said.
Crime Scene investigators examined the scene.
