Bald tyres illegally dumped along Elizabeth road, infuriating locals

More than 20 bald tyres have been dumped illegally along a road in Adelaide’s north, sparking outrage among locals.

Residents in the Playford Council district have expressed growing “disgust” over illegal dumping in their streets after an image of more than 20 dumped tyres surfaced.

Facebook user Mark Shaw posted a photo taken along Yorktown Road, which runs from Elizabeth to One Tree Hill, showing 26 seemingly bald tyres dumped on the side of the road.

Alongside the photo, Mr Shaw wrote, “seeing things like this makes me understand why rates keep getting raised so much”.

“This effort will likely require a couple of council guys 1-2 hours to get a trailer, come pick these up rain, hail or heat and get them dumped purely at cost to the council,” he said.

“That’s several hundred dollars worth of work and cost because some muppets don’t like the idea of proper disposal.

“You have all this money for these tyres, surely you can pay to get rid of them when you do your illegal burnouts … you want to reduce rates? Start by not having council spend so much on illegal dumping.”

Many other users agreed with the sentiment, with some commenting they had spotted other tyres along Main North Road, Butler St in Elizabeth Park and one hanging from a street sign for Craigmore Road.

Ann Stone called the act “disgraceful”, adding she’d seen them across the median strip and along the roadside.

Misty Norris wrote the photo was “absolutely heartbreaking to see” and it showed the dumpers had “no sense of community pride” and no respect for others or their environment.

“The mentality that everyone else can pay for their poor choices,” Ms Norris wrote.

“Council have to pay the exorbitant waste levy fees too! I’m sure it would be cheaper if that weren’t the case.

“However I doubt that would stop some people from behaving this way anyway.”

Zeljko N Judy Skorup said the display could start a conversation on the cost of responsible tyre disposal, which according to the most recent NAWMA brochure costs $14-$21 per tyre depending on if they are on or off the rim.

One user did see the humour and said the arrangement reminded them of an obstacle course.

Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said illegal dumping was a matter faced by all councils across the state.

“It is disappointing to see instances where individuals choose to unlawfully dump rubbish,” he said.

“At the City of Playford we provide a free hard-waste collection service, which includes two hard-waste collections per property per year.

“We strongly encourage residents to utilise this and other waste management services offered by Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA).

“We also encourage our community to report illegal dumping to council. Our teams will pick up the waste and dispose of it responsibly.”

SA Police said it had no records of any reported burnouts in the area, but encouraged anyone who witnessed a vehicle conducting a burnout to call police on 131 444 to “report the incident and provide as much detail as possible including, registration, description of the vehicle and direction of travel.”
