Aldi supermarket approved for centre of Salisbury in Adelaide’s northern suburbs

Opposition from a local council has failed to stop an Aldi being built in the centre of one of Adelaide’s oldest townships.

AN Aldi supermarket has been approved for the centre of Salisbury, despite opposition from the council because of its size.

Two houses will be demolished and several trees removed on the corner of Park Tce and Haigh St to create a 7326 sq m site for the German-owned store, which will cover 1782 sq m.

Salisbury Council had raised concerns about the size of the supermarket, arguing it wanted more businesses on the site rather than just a single Aldi.

The State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) refused a previous application by Aldi last September to build a group of shops, including a supermarket and three other stores.

Aldi successfully appealed to the Environment, Development and Resources Court and lodged a new application to build one store with a 115-space car park.

Salisbury Council objected, saying the supermarket exceeded the maximum size of 500 sq m allowed within the area’s zoning.

While supporting the creation of new economic opportunities, investment and jobs in Salisbury, council told SCAP it wanted the site to have multiple businesses rather than just Aldi.

“Council’s view is that the development could be designed to accommodate mixed-use development and achieve both anticipated built form outcomes and the car parking provision desired by the applicant,” it said.

“Council suggests that mixed land use elements should be treated as a minimum consideration and that, in its current form, the application is fundamentally at odds with key policy requirements.”

SCAP approved the supermarket, despite it exceeding the maximum size allowed under zoning and only partially achieving “a mixed use environment that is compatible with surrounding development”.

“Although the supermarket would exceed the maximum floor area recommended for this location, its siting, scale and material composition would adequately satisfy policy expectations for design and appearance of buildings ... and are supported.”

Work on the project is expected to start later this year.
