Five new playgrounds could be built in the next five years under a new $1.4 million Salisbury Council committee plan.

The committee, which will consider the proposal on November 9, has recommended installing playgrounds in five different locations while upgrading another in Paralowie to a “district level”.

It is proposing to build playgrounds at Little Para Lower in Parafield Gardens, Stanley Avenue in Salisbury, Southwark Avenue Reserve in Salisbury Heights, Noack Reserve in Pooraka and Coomurra Gully in Salisbury Heights from 2021/22.

Little Para would be the first cab off the rank with works to be completed next financial year.

However, the council is deferring works on upgrading Fairbanks Drive Reserve playground to a district level until 2021/22 but will continue with its design this financial year.

Disability advocate Ben Waechter welcomed the news and hoped each playground would be inclusive “for all abilities”.

It follows a council aim to have 85 per cent of houses within 500m of a play space, 800m of a local playground and 2.5km of a district playground.

Accessibility to “play spaces (400m walkability) is fractured due to city layout”, a committee report reveals.

“Increasing residential densities within the city (is) leading to a higher dependency on … play spaces,” it reads.

Cr Chad Buchanan said providing playground access for all residents was a “key priority” for the council.

“I’ve been working … to ensure there is adequate funds to upgrade Fairbanks Reserve to a district facility and include inclusive play equipment, a ‘Rage Cage’, a dog park and toilet facilities,” Cr Buchanan said.
