$3.55m upgrade of St Kilda Adventure Playground: Is this now SA’s best?

AFTER a false start, a long-awaited, multi-million playground upgrade in Adelaide’s north is now just days from officially opening — and there are already bold claims it’ll be the best in the state.

AFTER a false start, a long-awaited, multi-million playground upgrade in Adelaide’s north is now just days from officially opening — and there are already bold claims it’ll be the best in the state.

And this weekend a bandanna, striped shirt and sturdy boots are a must when visiting the St Kilda Adventure Playground, for its unveiling.

The pirate-themed event aims to celebrate Salisbury Council’s $3.55 million revamp of the popular playground, which includes a new bouncy boomerang feature, slippery slides on the volcano and castle structures, a basketball court, electric barbecues, shade areas and swings.

The free community event will feature a massive treasure hunt, fishing competition, face painting, airbrush tattooing, balloon animal displays and a puppet-making workshop.

Children and their families are also encouraged to don their best pirate attire on the day, which will be judged as part of a best dressed competition.

Mayor Gillian Aldridge expected more than 3500 people would attend the event.

“In my opinion, this is going to be the best playground in the state,” Ms Aldridge said.

“We hope it will let people who may not have spent their childhood here to realise the advantages that bringing their children along to this playground can offer them.”

Council has spent about $600,000 upgrading the volcano with three extra slides, a plastic boardwalk and upgraded large wave slide.

It was the second stage of a $3.5 million overhaul of the playground, following the installation of a giant bouncy boomerang attraction, new basketball court, electric barbecues and shade areas, and a makeover of the Cockle St entrance

The slide was expected to open in time for the October school holidays but was delayed as council waited for it to be certified as safe.

This weekend, a Coast Guard and life jacket demonstration will also be held at the nearby Boat Club, as well as boat viewing at the marina, a SAPOL Water Operations Unit display, live music, an animal farm, amusement rides, and a guest appearance by South Aussie with Cosi’s Andrew Costello.

Free tram rides will also be in operation between the playground and local Tramway Museum.

The St Kilda Celebrates family fun day will be at the playground on St Kilda Rd, St Kilda, from 11am-4pm. Details: 8406 8222 or salisbury.sa.gov.au
