A $2.7 MILLION Federal Government grant will help kickstart plans to turn the centre of Elizabeth into the CBD of the north.
Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said the money would speed up work on the project, which he expects to begin in the next 6-12 months.
The $400 million plan includes a mix of shops, offices and apartments, and a hotel.

“This provides short-term jobs in creating the infrastructure, but also provides the opportunity for further investment in residential and commercial buildings, which also drives new investment and new jobs in the local community,” he said.
“It’s vital, with Holden closing in 2017, we get this work off the ground as soon as possible.”
Adelaide-based group Development and Advisory will lead the CBD project, and commercial real estate agents CBRE began advertising leases last month for a 4000sq m office and retail building in its first stage.
The money for the 15-year project was announced as part of the Federal Budget.
Playford Council has allotted $3.2 million for the project in its 2015-16 draft budget.
Mr Docherty said initial works would include roads and kerbing to create the new allotments on land to the south of the Playford Civic Centre near the corner of Main North Rd and Phillip Hwy.
It will also include works to improve traffic and pedestrian safety along Playford Blvd, between the new allotments and Elizabeth Shopping Centre.
Federal Labor member for Wakefield Nick Champion welcomed the funding.
“This is much needed investment for the local community, not just for the facilities but for job creation and economic activity, which will help in the rejuvenation of the north,” Mr Champion said.
Mikaela Parham, who has worked at Cafe Aqua in Elizabeth Shopping Centre for the past two years, said the CBD project was exciting.
“We do need new things around the area and I definitely think we do need to attract more customers to the area,” she said.
Gawler Council was also awarded $5.5 million for its CBD development, which will cost $12.6 million.
