Up to 15,000 homes in a masterplanned estate have been proposed for land west of Port Wakefield Road.

Salisbury Council has officially endorsed a new “high-level” report, City Plan 2035, which has outlined its vision for the future use of the land between the road and the coast and includes 10 key planning areas.

The council plans to unlock additional employment, housing, recreation and eco-tourism opportunities while protecting the area’s coastal environment.

However, nearly 1000 hectares at the Dry Creek Salt Fields has been earmarked as a “masterplanned community”, or a “Salt Pans Development”, with up to 15,000 homes.

Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM said the land west of Port Wakefield Road provided the council’s most “significant opportunity to shape the city”.

“This report is the first step in unlocking the potential that exists in the area west of Port Wakefield Road, which has the ability to accommodate more than 12,000 new houses, while enabling employment opportunities with easy accessibility to key transport corridors,” Ms Aldridge said.

“There are also environmental benefits to be tapped into that recognise the important role St Kilda can play in delivering a regionally significant eco-tourism destination as the gateway to the International Bird Sanctuary and Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.”

A statement from the council said the project would require a “co-ordinated approach between government and private landowners”.

Key planning areas included employment, defence, St Kilda’s tourism opportunities, developing the coastal end of Little Para River, cycling corridors, new places of worship, manufacturing, an “eco-industrial park”, coastal rehabilitation and more accommodation options and service stations.
