The full force of the River Murray is on display in all its glory and the Murray Bridge council has developed a new guide for visitors to soak in the once-in-a-lifetime flood event.

Murray Bridge has become a popular destination for visitors eager to see the River Murray in flood, and the local council is encouraging onlookers to come and check out the stunning views.

The Rural City of Murray Bridge has released a flood viewing guide so visitors can see the floods safely and convienently, with the guide featuring the best spots to see the flooded Murray as well as local places to eat and where to find public toilets.

In December, the neighbouring Mid Murray Council also developed a scenic route guide for visitors to take in the natural flood phenomenon.

Murray Bridge Mayor Wayne Thorley said the council received a large number of inquiries from visitors wanting to view the river safely, prompting the release of the guide.

“The Murray River is on display in all her glory and understandably people are visiting our riverside community because they’re curious and want to see the Murray River in flood for themselves,” he said.

“There are some amazing photo opportunities at the moment, the wildlife is flourishing - we just need to make sure people are being safe while they’re viewing the river.

“Our number one priority is to keep people safe and if we can do that by providing a guide for the best views and services then we are happy to provide it.

“We appreciate the influx of visitors wanting to support our riverside communities by spending money here and supporting the locals doing it tough.”

Printed copies are available at Murray Bridge Visitor Information Centre, Murray Bridge Library and the Local Government Centre with the guide highlighting Clifftop Drive, Sunnyside, the Frank Jackman Lookout, the Lindsay Sims Memorial Lookout and The Round House among ideal spots to soak it all in.

Member for Hammond Adrian Pederick told The Messenger the flood event was an opportunity not to be missed and stressed the “spectacular event” could be viewed and enjoyed in safe ways.

“It’s something you possibly won’t see in your life. There is access all around the Murraylands and Riverland, and it’s perfectly safe to have a good look at the river and support regions doing it tough with a downturn in takings,” Mr Pederick said.
