A Murraylands school went into lockdown Wednesday while police searched the grounds before arresting a 55-year-old man and finding a knife of the school grounds.
The Murray Bridge South Primary School went into lockdown just before recess at 10.30am with students held in classrooms while police officers entered the school grounds.
A SAPOL spokesperson said at 10.40am, police responded to a disturbance at a home on Ashbrook Road, Murray Bridge.
“A male suspect ran from police through a nearby school grounds where he was subsequently arrested.” the spokesperson said.
“As a result of the incident a 55-year-old man from Strathalbyn was charged with aggravated assault.
“As a precautionary measure the Murray Bridge South Primary School was in lockdown for a short period of time.”
A knife was later located at the grounds, however police said they could not confirm that it was related to the incident.
A Department for Education spokesperson said the department was aware of the matter and confirmed the South school and the neighbouring children’s centre in the area were placed into lockdown.
“A person who was not a student or school community member came onto the sites, and as a precautionary measure both enacted lockdown procedures,” the spokesperson said.
“A letter has been sent to parents … the incident was unrelated to the school and children’s centre.”
