Yacht run aground at Port MacDonnell creating potential risks to fishing boats

A 12m yacht has been grounded off the coast after it was hit by two large waves, posing a potential risk to fishing boats in the area.

A yacht has run aground off the coast of Port MacDonnell, posing a potential risk to other vessels in the areas until it is removed.

Around 9:15pm on Thursday, local police received calls concerning a grounded yacht near the Port MacDonnell boat ramp.

Local fishermen witnessed the 12m fibreglass yacht run aground after it was hit by two large waves and quickly contacted Port MacDonnell police.

The two sailors aboard the vessel were not injured and were rescued by a fishing tender shortly afterwards.

The yacht remains grounded about 500m southwest of the boat ramp on the west side of the breakwater.

Police said its current position poses a risk to other operators and urged people in the area to take care.

SA Police said removal of the vessel was now subject to a salvage operation that make take several days.
