A prestigious regional private school has unveiled its plan for a $9m upgrade to the senior school as well as create dedicated spaces for students who require additional support.
St Martins Lutheran College, based in Mount Gambier, are hoping to break ground on the project in the 2023-24 school holidays.
St Martins acting principal Kat Elliott said pending council approvals, the new build will be ready by 2025.
“The proposed two-storey senior school development seeks to cater for the changing needs of our school community,” she said.
“Working closely with our team at DesignInc, our approach is to pursue an innovative, and flexible design outcome that enhances the teaching and learning experience for both staff and students.”
The R-12 school will divide the two-storey senior school hub with year 7 to year 9 students restricted to lower floors.
Upper year levels will have full access to the hub facilities.
“The lower level accommodates student services, Indigenous education services, learning enrichment and wellbeing centre.
“The upper level provides a new identity and ‘sense of place’ for the senior school cohort.”
The second floor will have five flexible classrooms, student and staff meeting spaces, as well as VET, open access, and career councillor support.
“The new hub provides large senior school classrooms with the ability to open to adjacent classrooms and informal breakout areas, allowing for flexible use of space and varying teaching styles,” Ms Elliott said.
“The large forum space can be used for independent study, group work, with the capability to spill out into adjacent areas for the hosting of large gatherings and events.
“Smaller scale booths and think-tanks are located throughout the hub to allow students and staff to work in small groups or independently.”
The wellbeing centre will be incorporated into the lower-level, with the intent “to serve the greater school community, as well as the new senior school hub”.
The wellbeing centre will house dedicated spaces to support students requiring greater support, as well as wellbeing spaces help the social and emotional development of the students.
