Emergency service crews responded to a call from a Mount Gambier motel after reports of a fire.

Just after 8:05am this morning, the MFS responded to a reported fire in a ground floor unit at The Henty motel, on Jubilee Highway East.

Guests and staff at the motel were evacuated while fire crews tended to the affected room.

A spokesperson from the MFS said on arrival MFS responders found the unit heavily smoke logged and a small fire on a single bed.

“The fire was contained to the bed and extinguished within a couple of minutes by firefighters.”

General manager at The Henty Tom Kosch said this morning’s event was an “unfortunate circumstance but thankfully no one was hurt and all staff and guests were safely evacuated until it was safe to return inside”.

Mr Kosch said damage from the fire was contained to one room where a guest was staying.

“Unfortunately the room is no longer usable and will need to be completely refurbished.”

The spokesperson from MFS said the matter has been handed over to SAPOL.

Meanwhile, the CFS says the threat for a scrub fire in Honan Native Forest Reserve near Glencoe and Wandilo north of Mount Gambier has reduced.

Six CFS trucks, about 30 CFS firefighters supported by Forest Industry personnel fought the fire with four aircrafts.
