NSW and Vic outperform country in NAPLAN

An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN results has revealed the South East schools which consistently performed to the best standard between 2017 and 2021.

Over that five-year period, Mary Mackillop Memorial School, in Penola, had higher Year 5 yearly results than any other school in the Limestone Coast, scoring an average of 2473.5 each year.

Robe Primary School in Robe was a close second in the Limestone Coast with an average score of 2445.75, while St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Millicent was the third best with an average score of 2424.

The top performing Year 9 school results were generated at Tenison Woods College, in Mount Gambier, where the average yearly result was 2879.3 over the five years.

The reception to Year 12 school also ranked fourth highest for its year 5’s who recorded an average score of 2422.5.

Catholic Education SA deputy director John Mula said it was pleasing to see such strong NAPLAN results.

“It is worth noting that NAPLAN is only one of a number of diagnostic measures used by schools to inform learning and teaching,” Mr Mula said.

“Our focus is on the development of the whole child. We track many other indicators including student wellbeing.

“We take a whole-school approach with staff, students and parents working in partnership together to support young people in their learning.

“NAPLAN doesn’t tell the whole story.”

St Martins Lutheran College, in Mount Gambier had the second highest results for its year 9’s in the region with an average score of 2853.5, while it’s year 5’s placed sixth best with an average score of 2408.25.

To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
