Police are investigating a video circulating online which shows several people setting fire to a dead cat on a roundabout in Mount Gambier.

The incident is alleged to have occurred at the roundabout on the corner of North Tce, Tumut Dr and Conroe Dr about 11.40pm on Saturday night.

The video first appeared on Snapchat posted by a teenage boy, who was recording his reaction to the disgusting act.

“They’re burning a cat G, they’ve burnt a cat, they burnt a f***ing cat man let’s go man,” the boy can be heard yelling as he changes the camera from front-facing to back, revealing the horrifying scene of a small figure on the road engulfed in flames.

A Mount Gambier local who came across the video on social media said it was “highly distressing seeing the video, it made me feel sick”.

“It was disgusting hearing such enthusiasm and excitement in their voices,” said the distressed viewer.

“I’m worried for the animals roaming the streets and some family that’s probably missing their cat now.”

Police say they have spoken to the people involved and are investigating the matter.

A year ago, the RSPCA said South Australia had the weakest animal protection laws in the nation after the state government launched a review aimed at making it easier to prosecute acts of animal cruelty.
