A motorbike rider on his L-plates has fronted court after police seized the incriminating hoon footage he eventually uploaded to TikTok.
After being caught riding 167 km/h along a major highway, police discovered Jarred Phillip Tirabassi, 20, had continued to hoon throughout the South-East after finding his self-incriminating footage.
A police prosecutor told the Mount Gambier Magistrate Court Tirabassi had blitzed the speed limit on several occasions between August 2022 and January 2023.
Tirabassi was spotted by police officers just outside the Mount Gambier Airport heading southbound towards the city along the Riddoch Hwy speeding at 167 km/h while in a 110 km/h zone.
Police discovered Tirabassi’s further hoon related offences when they seized his helmet mounted GoPro after he crashed while executing a wheelie just outside the Mount Gambier CBD on January 25.
Emergency services were called to Jubilee Highway West in Mount Gambier just before 11pm following the crash, with Tirabassi taken by ambulance to hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Tirabassi recorded himself blasting through the Mount Gambier Marketplace carpark hitting speeds of 87 km/h while in a 10km/h zone.
Later that night while travelling along Jubilee Highway West at 124km/h Tirabassi performed another wheelie. However, after bringing the front wheel down, Tirabassi grabbed his brakes causing him to lose control.
He suffered multiple fractures including to his wrist, toe and his collarbone in two places — muscle from his leg was ripped out, with Tirabassi also receiving a brain bleed that caused a serious concussion, the court heard.
Tirabassi posted footage in the moments leading up to the shocking crash from a now deleted TikTok account.
Tirabassi pleaded guilty to four counts of driving at a dangerous speed, driving in a reckless manner, two counts of aggravated driving at extreme speed and three counts of contravening a conditions of a learners permit.
On numerous occasions the L-plater recorded himself flouting the speed limits and performing wheelies often travelling at over 100km/h in residential areas.
Prior to his crash, Tirabassi filmed himself speeding along Bay Rd reaching up to 92km/h in the 60km/h zone, before increasing his speed to 113 km/h after reaching Morak, the court heard.
He has also filmed himself performing several wheelies while reaching speeds of 117 km/h along Pick Ave.
“This road has 11 intersecting residential side streets, a set of pedestrian lights — at one point during the footage he was riding down the middle of the road along the painted median strip,” a police prosecutor said.
A police prosecutor said Tirabassi almost collided with another vehicle after performing a wheelie and could be heard telling another rider “I should have paid more attention, I was losing it”.
Though he was set to be sentenced on Tuesday, his defence lawyer Kate Annelles discovered a potential administrative oversight that might have led to a doubling up of charges.
Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos adjourned the matter to August.
