An industry powerhouse in the forestry sector has announced a major multimillion dollar investment into renewable power generation that will see an entire Mount Gambier sawmill site powered by renewable electricity.
One Forty One have announced a $30 million investment into a renewable biomass power generation project at their Jubilee Sawmill in Mount Gambier – an initiative they said underscores their long-term dedication to the region, sustainability and innovation.
The project will see a new boiler and steam turbine – which represent a total investment of approximately $90 million – installed at the Mount Gambier sawmill, with the turbine expected to generate more than enough electricity to power the entire site.
Any excess electricity will be returned to the grid or used to enable the future electrification of forklifts, trucks and other machinery.
Company CEO Wendy Norris said the Jubilee Sawmill has been part of the company since 2018 and they have “proudly” invested in the team and site every year since then.
“The need to replace (the) current boiler, which is reaching its end of life, has presented us with a unique opportunity to rethink how we utilise steam and consume electricity at our site,” she said.
“By installing a steam turbine power generation system, we will be able to produce electricity from biomass, significantly repurposing wood fibre, preparing for our future energy needs.”
Premier Peter Malinauskas said this investment into one of South Australia’s most significant industries is exciting for the state.
“This is a welcome announcement, which means longevity of technology, reduced carbon emissions and renewable energy going back into the grid,” he said.
The announcement of the investment comes on the same day new designs for Mount Gambier’s Forestry Centre of Excellence were released – which is expected to become an international leader in forest industries research, education, product and market development.
The installation of the new power generation system at the Jubilee Sawmill is expected to be completed by 2026.
