A cannabis crop has been discovered after a Mount Gambier garage went up in flames on Monday afternoon.
Just after 1pm, four Metropolitan Fire Service appliances attended the premises on the corner of Creek Street and O’Connor Drive and brought the blaze under control in 35 minutes.
Mount Gambier police crime scene investigators then located remains of a hydroponic cannabis crop with around 12 plants and suspect an electrical fault connected with the hydroponic equipment may have sparked the blaze.
An MFS spokesperson said the fire caused close to $10,000 in damage and was contained to the garage with the home and neighbouring properties undamaged.
“It was well involved in fire on arrival with some smoke emanating from the property,” the spokesperson said.
“They had it close to extinguished within about 40 minutes but with some hot spots that they were still dealing with.
“While the shed was damaged, there is potential for it to be repaired, it was mainly the roof the fire went through.”
No one at the property at the time of the fire and there have been no reported injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or report on line at www.crimestopperssa.com.au
