After almost 18 months of waiting, delays and community speculation, Mount Gambier’s first sushi train restaurant will open this month, breathing life into one of three empty shops in prime positions on the city’s main street.

The announcement Sushi Hiro, a popular conveyor-belt sushi restaurant chain, was coming to Mount Gambier was first made in September 2022.

Franchise owner Sen Yuan Ge hoped to be in business by Christmas of that year but delivery of the staple sushi conveyor belt from an overseas supplier during was delayed.

Since then, locals have been keeping an eager eye on the progress of the build, monitoring any new additions to the shop that can be viewed through the shop’s windows, which now showcase a near completed, modern sushi train restaurant set up complete with the instantly recognisable booths and conveyor belt.

With things in the shop seeming like they’re set to go, Mr Ge confirmed to The Advertiser that he “plans to open in February”.

“It’s going to be a challenge because it’s the first shop we’ve opened far away from Adelaide,” he said.

Sushi Hiro’s Mount Gambier location will be the first, and currently sole, sushi train restaurant in the Limestone Coast region.

Mr Ge said he was excited to “see how it goes”.

The restaurant will be running celebratory promotions during its initial opening days, with Sushi Hiro members entitled to 15 per cent off during the first three days of the shop’s operation.

The new Sushi Hiro is located at 58 Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier, inside one of three vacant buildings situated on the corner of the city’s Aldi and Coles complex, and will hopefully bring some life into the structure that has sat empty for several years.
