Country football clubs have rallied together to mourn the loss of Korrey Smith, a bright young footballer who was loved “on and off the field”.

The 25-year-old Dartmoor man, who was formerly of Mt Gambier, died after a single-vehicle crash in Victoria on Easter Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 4.30am in Greenwald, south east of Dartmoor, following reports a car had hit a tree.

“The DFNC would like to send their deepest condolences to Aileen, Pud and Carol, Amy, Holly, partner Bek and the extended Smith family on the passing of one of our club legends,” the club said in a statement.

“Korrey wasn’t just a player, he was a brother. A true, loyal, dedicated club and committee member, all-round superstar and friend to everyone.

“He will be so incredibly missed on and off the field.”

Knowing Korrey “wouldn’t want it any other way”, the Giants are set to face off against the Heywood Lions in his honour on Saturday.

A spokesperson from the Lions said the club was deeply saddened by the loss of the “larger-than-life” player.

“On behalf of the Heywood Football and Netball Club, we pass on our deepest condolences to everyone affected by the sad passing of Korrey,” a HFNC spokesperson said.

“Korrey was a great talent and competitor on the footy field, and a friendly larger-than-life character off the field who was constantly seen helping out.

“(He) always had time to stop and say g’day.

“Our thoughts are with family and friends at this hard time, he will be missed.”

His former club, the Greater Western Victoria Rebels, said they were also mourning his loss.

Another person posted on social media that they were “gutted at the loss”.

“There have been so many memories captured, so many friendships made — mates who will forever miss you,” a friend posted.

“You were one of the boys, one of the men and one of the brothers.

“The world is missing its biggest legend. Such a talented sportsman, such a character when the show knocked off and a bloody gentleman every hour of every day.”

His former club, the Greater Western Victoria Rebels, said Mr Smith was beloved by his teammates.

“We send our sincere condolences to his family, his partner, his many friends from near and far and his teammates at the Dartmoor Football Netball Club,” the Rebels said in a statement.

“We are thinking of you all at this very sad time.”

Investigations into the crash are ongoing and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
